Local Designer, Haskell R. (Hank) Matheny, Wins First Place
Award in Signature Kitchens & Baths Magazine Design Competition
Hank
Matheny, ASID, Owner and Principle Designer of Haskell
Interiors Design Collection, has been awarded First Place in the
baths division of the Signature Kitchens & Baths magazine 9th
Annual National Design Competition.
The winning bath submission was a master bath remodel for a
client in Chattanooga, TN. The existing master bath was totally
gutted allowing for a completely new layout of the room to make
way to create the quiet retreat filled with luxury requested by
the client. A French toile fabric from the client inspired the
look and material selection for the renovation. To give the
space a clean, up-to-date feeling, Matheny selected white
marble, blue and green glass tile and blue metallic paint for
the surfaces and to provide a calm, elegant background to the
fixtures and furnishings. Highly reflective materials such as
polished nickel, crystal, mirrors and mirrored furniture add
spark without fussiness. Cool, light materials were balanced
with browns and woods in the custom cabinetry and upholstery.
Glamour was added to the room by using monograms, a faux lynx
fur rug and a crystal chandelier.
This annual design competition received 45 project submissions
from across the United States. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place was
awarded in each of four categories.
A two-page article highlighting the design created by Mr.
Matheny is featured in the Fall 2007 issue of Signature Kitchens
& Baths magazine now available nationwide on newsstands, in
bookstores and at select home-improvement stores

Haskell Interiors Design Collection Wins First Place in National
Design Competition
Haskell
Interior Design Collection Haskell Interior Design Collection
was recently awarded first place in the 43rd annual National
Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) 2007 design competition.
Haskell Interiors Design Collection was awarded first place in
category nine: showrooms. The winning showroom vignette is on
display in the Haskell Interiors Kitchen and Bath Gallery
located at 85 1st Street, NE, Cleveland, TN. This colorful bath
display, designed by Haskell (Hank) Matheny and Kathy Massey,
features glass tiles on both the floor and walls, including a
custom poppy mural.
“To
be singled out for this national award is a truly great honor,”
Matheny said.
The competition’s theme was Art of the Industry with the idea of
finding the next master artists among NKBA members who can
transcend the ordinary to create the extraordinary.
NKBA judges awarded first place to Haskell Interiors Design
Collection based on visual appeal, creative elements, principles
of design, overall presentation (including quality of floor
plan, perspective and photos) and basic safety and ergonomics of
the design.
“We wanted the room to give a relaxing feeling like being at the
ocean with the blue sky above your head. The entire floor, walls
and cabinets are glass, which gives the impression of water. The
walls are a light blue to represent the sky and the floor is a
darker blue to represent the ocean. The mural above the tub is a
custom-made piece of work to accent the bathroom,” said Matheny.
Haskell Interiors competed against a record breaking 567 entries
from the United States , Canada and Bermuda.
The competition was separated into 11 distinct categories, each
designed to represent the latest trends in kitchen, bath and
other-room design. The categories were created to reflect how
designers stretch their imaginations and put their creativity to
work for their clients in a variety of settings.
A panel of 14 industry experts served as judges for this years
design competition.
The awards ceremony, honoring 44 finalists, recently took place
during the kitchen and bath industry show in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Kathy Massey was present at the awards ceremony to represent
Haskell Interiors Design Collection and accept the first place
honor.
